Traveling for Cosmetic Surgeries - What You DON'T See!

“2 Americans dead and 2 found alive in Mexico kidnapping” This was a recent headline from CNN about four friends going to Mexico - One of them going for a cosmetic procedure. They were unfamiliar with the area and couldn't find the doctor's office. Due to poor phone service, they were not able to get in touch with the office. Members of the Mexican cartel mistook them for drug smugglers and kidnapped all four of them. Ultimately, two of them were found dead, and the other two were severely injured

“Am I willing to take this chance?” You may think traveling for cosmetic surgery is a great idea - no matter if it's Mexico or Miami. Besides, you can turn it into a vacation, see the sights, and explore areas like famous beaches. What you don't see are shady practices and not knowing what you're really getting into. According to an article by the Miami Herald, "A Plantation doctor untrained in anesthesia put a cosmetic surgery patient two levels of sedation beyond consent and didn’t react properly when the woman’s heartbeat slowed, according to the Florida Department of Health." This mother of two never woke up from her procedure.

A woman was quoted a price and paid for a BBL procedure at another practice in Miami. "The price she was quoted – and paid upfront – increased the day of the procedure, and she said she did not meet her surgeon until she was about to be placed under general anesthesia," according to CNN Health. This patient developed infection and other health issues just days later.

So, is it worth traveling somewhere to have someone you don't know perform such an important procedure?

Without the proper research and care, your surgery elsewhere can quickly turn into a nightmare at home.

Dr. Michelle Owens and Dr. John Gonzalez have seen many patients seeking consultations only after they have decided to do their surgery in another state or country. Many of our patients say the same thing “ I thought this could never happen to me. You read about these stories online but you think that the company you’re booking your surgery through has your best interests in mind.”

What they don't tell you is that vacation activities - like swimming, sunbathing, or drinking alcohol - can actually slow healing. In addition, flight isn’t recommended for at least ten days following surgery, and recovery can continue for several weeks. If something goes wrong following your surgery, surgeons may not be able - or want - to help correct the bad surgery. There are several legal reasons that could make them reluctant to correct any complications, and malpractice laws don’t apply in other countries. That could make any kind of corrective surgery - if you find a willing surgeon - more expensive than the original surgery. When it comes to your health, you’ll get what you pay for, and it likely won’t be the vacation you had in mind.

Here at Acadia Women’s Health we understand that even after all these horror stories, people still choose to have surgery in other states and countries, and we would like to help. If you are considering having surgery elsewhere, come by our office to speak with one of our Doctors BEFORE you make your decision. Our consultations are FREE, so you have nothing to lose by coming in and speaking with them.

If you are still thinking about having your surgery elsewhere, give our office a call to set you up a free consultation before you do so. We have your best interests in mind, and don't want to see you make a life-threatening mistake!

Don’t make a quick decision based on what the internet tells you is safe. Make your health a priority and hear it straight from a licensed Physician.

Sincerely, Dr. Michelle Owens & Dr. John Gonzalez
