Urinary Incontinence and how to control it

If you’re suffering from Urinary Incontinence, know that you’re not alone. This is a condition of inability to resist the sensation to urinate sometimes causing involuntary leakage. While this is not life threatening,we cannot ignore it.

What Causes Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence can be caused by different bladder problems, like bladder stones, infections, weak pelvic muscles and medical problems. Some of the common causes include:

·        Age

·        Genetics

·        Obesity

·        Pregnancy and Childbirth

·        Activities

·        Medical Condition

·        Pelvic Floor Muscles

What can help with Urinary Incontinence?

·        Just have water when drinking - cut down on caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, acidic food, and the like.

·        Limit sweets - high blood sugar raises the amount of urine it makes which results in frequent urination, urgency, and most likely incontinence.

·        Eat more food rich in fiber - this will help you counter constipation which triggers

·        urinary incontinence.

·        Train your bladder

·        Extend the amount of time on your toilet visits by trying to hold your urine for

about an hour or two after your previous trip. This helps you resist the urge to urinate.

Treatment for urinary incontinence depends on its severity and causes. It is so important to get

recommendations from a Physician on coming up with care solutions. Acadia Women’s Health has one of the only full time Urogynecologists in all of Acadiana.
