5 Things You Need For Healthy Skin

Considering that your skin is the largest organ of the body, it’s no surprise that most people have their bathroom drawers stuffed with makeup and skincare products.  Unfortunately, most of those products are unnecessary and overused, doing more harm than good.

Our Skin

Our skin is comprised of 3 layers, with the Epidermis being the outermost layer. This layer is subject to the most abuse, even when slathered with lotions, potions and creams. The epidermis becomes vulnerable to UV light, which can discolor and age the skin. Over time, this causes skin to become dull, wrinkled and dry.

5 Things Your Skin Needs

The good news is there really are only a few things your skin needs to stay healthy.  Here are the top 5:

1) Cleanser: Washing your skin not only removes makeup, but it also removes the daily buildup of dirt, pollutants and pore-clogging oil.  Cleaning the top layer of your skin helps to keep it blemish free and radiant.

2) Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation helps to remove old cells that have accumulated, which leaves the skin dull, rough and dry.  Routine exfoliation will keep your skin looking fresh and healthy.  There are a number of professional options for exfoliation including, but not limited to Dermaplaning, Hydrafacial and Deep Pore Facials.

3) Antioxidants:.  Antioxidants are powerful substances that help to fight inflammation-containing substances in the body known as free radicals. Free radicals, such as excessive sun exposure, can accelerate the natural effects of aging and break down collagen. Collagen is what helps the skin maintain its elasticity and strength, keeping skin looking supple and young. Antioxidants in skin care products have been shown to offer benefits such as lightening age spots, slowing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and even helping to reduce acne.

4) Moisturizer: The daily loss of skin cells leaves skin vulnerable to dryness and the elements.  Using a moisturizer, nourishes the skin and hydrates what is lost from weather and pollutants, while giving it the boost it needs to repair itself and stay healthy.

5) Sunscreen: It’s no secret that UV rays damage everyone’s skin. By using sunscreen you are protecting yourself from skin cancer and helping prevent signs of aging, discoloration and wrinkles.  Skin naturally loses its elasticity, and sun exposure only accelerates it.  Everyone should wear sunscreen every day, regardless of skin type.  More importantly, make sure to leave adequate time for sunscreen to take affect before exposure to the sun, generally 20 minutes.
