Annual Wellness / Gynecology Visits

It is recommended that women begin receiving an annual well-woman (gynecology) exam between the ages of 18 and 21, when they become sexually active, or if any gynecological issues present themselves in adolescence. The purpose of your routine annual gynecology exam is to check your female organs to make sure that they are in good gynecological health.

Annual gynecological exams and menopause/post hysterectomy: It is recommended that you continue to be evaluated during an annual gynecological exam post menopause/post hysterectomy. It is important to continue to monitor your gynecological health throughout your lifetime. This is a great time to discuss any new symptoms that occur as you age, including menopausal issues, abnormal body changes, and osteoporosis treatments.
Your annual gynecological exam will generally consist of the following:
  • Annual bloodwork if you do not have a primary care provider
  • An assessment of your current health
  • A breast exam to check for lumps, skin changes, or nipple discharge
  • A pelvic exam to check your vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, and pelvis, including your ovaries, for masses, growths or other abnormalities
  • A Pap test to screen for cervical cancer (for those 21 and older)
  • STI cultures (for those under 25)
  • Urine sample to check for bladder issues (including incontinence), kidney health, various infections, and pregnancy.
Additional Testing may include:
  • Mammograms (we do not perform these here, but order them for patients who may require them)
  • HIV Testing (at the discretion of the provider or request from the patient)
  • Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Testing (at the discretion of the provider or request from the patient)
We see patients outside of their Annual Well-Woman Visits for diagnostic, evaluation, and treatment of gynecological issues. Some of the most common reasons that these appointments are scheduled:

Bladder Leakage / Urinary Incontinence Visits

Over 15 million women in the US suffer from bladder control problems (urinary incontinence). Do you find yourself running to the bathroom at the most inconvenient times? Does your bladder leak when you cough, sneeze, strain, or lift things? If so, you may be experiencing urinary incontinence.

Don’t let bladder leakage rule your life.  According to Dr. Owens, she has seen patients in their 90's who don't have incontinence, or bladder leakage, issues. It is absolutely something that you can get under control with the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Medtronic Bladder Control Treatments

One option of treatment that has proven successful to those who qualify is the Medtronic Bladder Control System. With a quick, simple outpatient procedure, and little to no downtime, you can see immediate results. Welcome to the wonders of Medtronic Bladder Control Therapy!

How Medtronic Bladder Control Works:
A Medtronic Bladder Control system regulates the sacral spinal nerves with mild electrical pulses. This helps the brain and the nerves to communicate so the bladder and related muscles can function properly together. Medtronic Bladder Control Therapy may help you resume normal activities and help you avoid frustrating or embarrassing experiences associated with overactive bladder. We are so confident that this procedure will be life changing that we will let you take a test run to see for yourself!
Medtronic Bladder Control Therapy Trial Process
Step 1: Talk with your doctor to see if Medtronic Bladder Control Therapy is right for you.
Step 2: Decide to try it by going through an evaluation. (The evaluation generally lasts several days.)
Step 3: Before and during the evaluation, you'll be asked to track your symptoms to help determine how well Medtronic Bladder Control Therapy works for you.

Teen Health Visits

Has your daughter missed school because of her menses? Is she complaining of stomach cramps? Does she experience frequent migraines around her cycle? If so, there may be a simple solution that our providers can come up with to alleviate these problems.

Many teenagers don’t know what is happening to their changing body, and it is important for them to be well educated in order to make informed decisions. If you are uncomfortable with having certain conversations with your daughter that pertain to her body, but also understand that they are necessary–the providers at Acadia Women’s Health can help you with this.

We provide many services for teenage girls, including school physical exams and Gardasil vaccinations (this vaccine can prevent most cases of cervical cancer if given before a girl or woman is exposed to the virus).

Gynecological Robotic Surgery

The da Vinci® Surgical System is a surgical platform that was approved by the (FDA) in 2000 and was designed to facilitate complex procedures using a minimally invasive approach. (Minimally invasive surgery may cause less pain, scarring, and damage to healthy tissue, and the patient may have a faster recovery than with traditional surgery.)Though it is often called a "robot" the da Vinci System cannot act on its own. All surgeries are actually performed 100% by one of our physicians, Dr. Owens or Dr. Gonzalez, controlling the mechanisms from the console.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

With da Vinci®, a surgeon can perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions and unmatched precision. As a result, patients may get back to their lives faster without the usual recovery following major surgery.
  • Lower Complication Rate
  • Shorter Hospital Stay
  • Less Blood Loss & Likelihood for Transfusion
  • Lower Hospital Admission Rate

Where Do We Perform Robotic Surgeries?

Our da Vinci® procedures are performed at both Lafayette General Medical Center and Acadia General Hospital for urology and gynecology procedures, mainly for:
  • Hysterectomy Procedures
  • Endometriosis Diagnosis and Removal
  • Fibroids Diagnosis and Removal
  • Drainage of Cysts
  • Infertility Diagnosis
